TERPS' MUSTAF CHOOSES NBA

Maryland sophomore forward Jerrod Mustaf announced today he would leave the school and apply for next month's NBA draft.

Mustaf, citing the "wicked sanctions" slapped on the school by the NCAA, said he decided to leave the turmoil created by the penalties and turn professional.

"I made the decision to turn the page on this part of my life and open a new chapter," Mustaf said at a news conference. "I have no fears about this decision. I fully weighed both the educational and economic factors of this decision. I have made a commitment to my parents and myself to earn my degree within five years.

Mustaf said he hoped to be taken in the first round.

He previously said that he would wait until after an NCAA appeal in August to decide whether to remain at Maryland or transfer to another school because of the Terrapins' upcoming two years of NCAA sanctions.

The 6-foot-10, 240-pound Mustaf was Maryland's leading scorer last season, averaging 18.5 points per game. He was also the team's second-leading rebounder at 7.7 per game.

"He has made a decision to play in the NBA," Maryland coach Gary Williams said. "Obviously, we hope he is successful. If he had stayed in college he would have definitely kept developing. I guess he felt it was time."

The Washington Post reported NBA personnel have said Mustaf probably would not be selected before the 20th pick in this draft, but if he stayed at Maryland another season he could possibly rise into the top 10.
