IN SCHOOL

THE ATLANTIC COAST CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS were held in Pulaski recently. In the high school competition, Patrick Henry High School finished in second place. William Fleming High School finished third.

Members of the Patrick Henry team were: Craig Messinger, Tosha Finks, Matthew Smith, Donny Thacker, Theodore Griesenbrock and Aaron Miller.

William Fleming was represented by Angela Jones, Duane Riggins, Aaron Atkins and Vincent Reyes.

In high school individual competition, Griesenbrock placed sixth and Messinger placed seventh.

Miller, Clay Smith, Phillip Barrett and Jeff Young participated in the middle school competition.

In the elementary competition, Fairview Elementary School and Ruffner Middle School tied for fifth place. Fairview was represented by James Miller, Steven Slates and Alan Slates. Ruffner was represented by James Angove and Roscoe Tasco.

Carrie Moore placed eighth in the elementary school individual competition.

\ GLORIA VICKERS ANDERSON was among the 100 or more graduates of historically black colleges who were honored recently as distinguished alumni during the 15th National Conference on Blacks in Higher Education.

Anderson was nominated by her alma mater, Virginia State University in Petersburg. A teacher in Franklin County schools in Rocky Mount, she is the 1990 recipient of the Virginia Teacher of the Year Award.

The conference was sponsored by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

\ CHARLOTTE KIDD has received the 1990 Outstanding Alumni Award from the Virginia Tech College of Human Resources. Kidd, a 1979 master's degree graduate, was cited for her outstanding community leadership and her involvement with promoting the college. She is president of the College Alumni Organization.
