GREATEST HIT: The Lynchburg Symphony and the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center Chorus will present Carl Orff's widely acclaimed "Carmina Burana" on Sunday afternoon at 3 in E.C. Glass High School auditorium in Lynchburg.

The symphony also will perform the rousing "Wellington's Victory" by Beethoven.

At 2 o'clock on Sunday, Dr. James Elson will preview the concert.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for students age 18 and under. For information, call (804) 845-6604.\ PRETTY THINGS: The Blue Ridge Iris Society will fill Fair Acres, the Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs' headquarters on Avenham Avenue, with flowers on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Go by, take a look, raise your spirits a bit. \ ON THE BOARDS: Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke will have another of its monthly Centerpieces on Wednesday. This one is called "Deadline Dilemma." Carol Costa wrote it, and Mary Best-Bova will direct the staged reading. Show time is 12:15 p.m.\ \ FUN IN THE SUN (?): North Cross Field Day, the private school's annual fund-raiser, will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the school grounds. Fun, games, fine arts items on sale - all the usual elements will be there.\ \ WHAT COLD HANDS: Opera lovers will identify those words - or words to that effect - as coming from Giacomo Puccini's "La Boheme," which will open Thursday night in Olin Hall of Roanoke College under the auspices of the Southwest Virginia Opera.

Thursday's performance is sold out, but the Bohemians will live (and die) it up on Saturday, May 19, and Monday, May 20, as well. Show time is 8 each night. The performances will be in Italian with English supertitles above the stage.

Tickets are $15 and $13. For reservations, call 375-2333.\ \ DAZZLING DANCE: The Virginia School of the Arts will present "An Evening of Elegance" tonight at 7:30 in E.C. Glass auditorium in Lynchburg when it presents principal dancers from the American Festival Ballet, Ballet Austin, Ballet West and the Pennsylvania Ballet in concert with its own students.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. For information, call (804) 847-8688.\ \ NEW MUSIC: Nationally known composers and musicians will travel to Washington and Lee University in Lexington for "Sonoklect," a festival of new music set for Monday through Saturday, May 19.

Seminars, master classes, panel discussions and concerts will be included. All will be open to the public for free.

Among the visiting composers: Earl Brown and Chinary Ung, the former an influential composer of this century and the latter an up-and-comer.
