C&P, BELL SETTLE TREASURY DISPUTE

Bell Atlantic Corp. and the Treasury Department said Thursday they had settled a dispute over whether the company, the nation's largest provider of local telephone service, had misled the federal government.

The settlement lifted an April 3 suspension in which the Treasury temporarily barred Bell Atlantic from bidding for any new government contracts and accused the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co., a Bell subsidiary, of including "misleading information" in a bid for a $100 million contract.

Both sides said the company had submitted information in support of its position that it did not misrepresent any fact to the Treasury.

The settlement does not resolve whether C&P will get the contested contract for a digital communication system with more than 20,000 phone lines at 16 locations in Washington, a Bell Atlantic spokesman said. - The New York Times
