APCO ASSISTANCE PLAN SETS RECORD

Customer contributions to Appalachian Power Co.'s Neighbor-to-Neighbor program, which helps pay electric bills for needy customers, were the highest in the 1989-90 season since the program began in 1982. Contributions of $171,423 came from 19,144 people and organizations in Virginia and West Virginia, said Glenn Reynolds, Apco marketing and customer service director. Apco gave $75,000 in matching funds, making a total of $246,423.

The number of Virginia contributors was up by 954 to a total of 10,940. The amount of Virginia contributions was $103,345, an increase of $11,200. As of April 17, the program had helped 1,586 Virginia families but funds are still being distributed by the Department of Social Services. - Staff report
