SCC ASKED TO CURB FREE CALLS

An organization representing telephone companies in Virginia asked the State Corporation Commission on Thursday to sharply reduce the number of free directory assistance calls for phone customers.

The Virginia Telephone Association's proposal would cut free calls from eight to two for residential customers. Businesses, now allowed eight free calls, would get none. The charge for each call above the limit would be 29 cents.

The VTA said the average household makes fewer than one such call per month. - Associated Press
