BEDFORD SENIOR PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR

A Liberty High School senior has been named a White House Presidential Scholar, the highest honor given to high school students.

The first student ever awarded the honor in Bedford County, David R. Bobbitt is one of 141 Presidential Scholars across the country.

Bobbitt named his first grade teacher, Dorothy M. McKenzie, as the person who had the most influence on his overall academic achievement. He was one of only three scholars in the country to name an elementary school teacher as his mentor.

McKenzie, who teaches at Montvale Elementary School, will be honored in Washington, D.C.,in June. She also will receive a plaque from Bobbitt as a symbol of gratitude.

Bobbitt, one of two Presidential Scholars in Virginia, plans to attend the University of Virginia, where he will be a Jefferson Scholar. Only about 15 incoming UVa freshmen win the prestigious fellowship, which provides tuition for four years.
