AT&T EXPECTS RECORD MOTHER'S DAY

AT&T expects the number of long-distance placed this Mother's Day will exceed last year's record by more than six million.

The company estimates 53 million long-distance calls will be placed Sunday. Only those calls that are answered by a person, or in some cases, devices such as answering machines are included in the estimates.

The AT&T network handles about 115 million calls on a typical business day. Holiday calls are heaviest in suburban areas and tend to last twice as long as business day calls, which are heaviest in metropolitan areas.

To avoid busy signals, AT&T suggests customers dial directly and call between the low-volume hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
