FLEMING SWEEPS DISTRICT TRACK MEET AS EXPECTED

William Fleming provided the expected and Cave Spring's Jenny Sheets provided the unexpected Friday at the Roanoke Valley District track meet.

Fleming did what it has done so often, sweep the boys' and girls' team championships, albeit by a smaller margin than in many years. Cave Spring held on stubbornly to finish second in the boys' and girls' competition at Salem High.

Sheets, long of leg and talent, triumphed in the 800 and 1,600 meters. She set the only two meet records on a warm, blustery day that was hard on jumpers and runners alike.

The Colonels' Joe Baytops, meanwhile, had a hand in four first-place finishes - in the high jump and 300 hurdles, and as a member of the 1,600 and 3,200 relays - as Fleming beat Cave Spring 180-169. Patrick Henry (85 points) was third, followed by Pulaski County (47) and Franklin County (32).

Tracy Claytor won both girls' hurdles events and anchored the 400 relay as Fleming edged Cave Spring 162-150 1/2. PH (93 1/2) was third, Pulaski County (46) fourth and Franklin County (34) fifth.

Sheets came into the meet thinking of the team and not individual goals.

"We have a really good team this year and I thought we had a chance at winning the district," she said. "I wanted to give it everything I had."

Sheets did so, running a personal-best and meet-record time of 5 minutes, 21.4 seconds in the 1,600. She also set a meet record with a 2:23.4 clocking in the 800.

"Now that it's getting toward the end of the season, she was able to rest up so she can concentrate on two events," said Lori Taylor, Cave Spring's distance coach. " . . . Today may have been the first day all season that she felt really rested."

Cave Spring's Jill Fountain, the defending Group AAA champion in the shot put, won that event (37 feet) and the discus (113-1 1/2), but the Knights again were disappointed in a big meet with Fleming.

"This is twice we've come so close," said Joe Hafey, Cave Spring's head coach. "At the [Cosmopolitan], we lost by four points and then we lose by 11 here. At this point, it's getting a little frustrating."

Perhaps the most stirring performance of the day was Baytops' effort in the 300 hurdles, when he came from far behind to win in a time of 40.9 seconds.

"I got off to a bad start and my steps got off so I had to stretch out my stride," he said. "When I came out of the turn, I was in about fifth place, so I gave it all I had."

Claytor, Baytops' teammate and a fellow hurdler, said the conditions were not the best for her specialty. Claytor had times of 14.9 in the 100 hurdles and 47.8 in the 300 hurdles, well off her best in both events.

"It's hard running in the wind, especially with the hurdles, because it messes up your steps," she said. "Overall, though, I was pleased with the way things went."

Fleming's girls swept all three relays.

Patrick Henry's Mike Glowczynski, a senior middle-distance specialist, was a disappointed victim of Thursday's rainout of the meet. He had to take an advance placement test in calculus Friday and arrived at the track too late to participate.

"I couldn't afford to miss that test," he said.

Glowczynski was scheduled to run the 1,600 and 800. His best times of 2:01 in the 800 and 4:29.5 in the 1,600 were among the best in Timesland this year. It appeared certain he would have qualified for the Northwestern Region meet next week had he run Friday. BOYS Team scores
