RAIDERS EXTEND VIC TITLE STREAK TO THREE

North Cross won its third consecutive Virginia Independent Conference boys' soccer title Friday. The Raiders rolled to a 9-0 victory over the Miller School in a semifinal, then shut down Randolph-Macon Academy 5-0 in the championship game.

Joe Basile, who scored two goals in each game, picked up his 100th career goal in the first game and finished with 102. Goalie Jim Dixon had the two shutouts with defensive help from Dustin Fonder.

In other boys' soccer:

Michael Eddy had two goals and an assist to lead Patrick Henry to a 4-0 Roanoke Valley District semifinal victory over William Fleming.

Todd Creasy and Frank Draper, substituting for two injured Patriots goalkeepers, combined for seven saves and the shutout.

In the second semifinal, Cave Spring routed Franklin County 7-0 as Mike Duffy had two goals. The Eagles did not get off a shot.

Cave Spring will meet Patrick Henry at noon today for the RVD championship at South Roanoke Park.

John Cornelius scored two goals and Craig Robinson had one as Jefferson Forest defeated Rustburg 3-1 in a Seminole District semifinal. In the second semifinal, Nelson County routed Brookville 6-2.

Jefferson Forest will meet Nelson County for the district championship Monday night at Liberty High School.

\ BASEBALL: At Cave Spring, Dee Dalton hit a two-run homer and knocked in four runs as the Knights won their 10th straight game, 8-2 over Pulaski County (5-7 in the district, 10-8 overall) in the Roanoke Valley District.

Cave Spring is 11-1, 14-4.

\ SOFTBALL: Shelley Bowles ran her record to 14-0 with two victories as Franklin County won the Optimist Club of Roanoke Lady Spartans Invitational tournament at the Salem Civic Center fields.

Bowles struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth inning to preserve a 5-4 victory against Amherst in a semifinal, then homered and saw her team rally for a 4-3 victory over Salem in the championship game.

Salem won the other semifinal, 7-6 against Amherst, as Tracy Palmer (10-2) survived a four-run seventh inning by the Lancers.

Cave Spring took advantage of eight Patrick Henry errors to defeat the Patriots 12-4 in the Roanoke Valley District.

At Bedford, Kristen Stanley pitched a two-hitter as Rustburg upset Liberty 5-0 in a Seminole District regular-season finale. The loss enabled Brookville (16-1 in district play and overall) to clinch at least a tie for first place in the regular-season race with Liberty, which finished 16-2. Brookville can win the title outright with a victory over Jefferson Forest this afternoon.
