But after taking a few lumps, Honeywell is starting to get his bearings in the new league.
Honeywell made his Municipal Field debut Friday night and shut down the Peninsula Pilots, allowing the Bucs to rally for a 7-6 victory.
"I've been struggling," said Honeywell, who pitched 4 scoreless innings in relief of starter Paul Miller to pick up the victory. "This [the Carolina League] has a lot better hitters. But I pitched well in my last outing [in Lynchburg on Tuesday], and tonight was my best outing. I had to establish myself. I feel like I've made the adjustment now."
Honeywell provided the kind of relief pitching the Bucs (12-18) hadn't seen in a couple of weeks.
He took over after Peninsula had rattled Miller for six runs on eight hits to take a 6-2 lead and retired the first four Pilots he faced.
He gave up two hits and walked three during his stint, but struck out five, including the side in the eighth inning.
By keeping Peninsula (8-20) from extending its lead, Honeywell gave Salem time to mount a comeback.
A two-run double by catcher Mandy Romero pulled the Bucs to 6-5 in the seventh. They won it in the next inning.
After Chris Estep doubled to start the eighth, Darwin Pennye walked to send Peninsula starter Kyle Duke to the dugout.
Facing Pilots reliever Ron Mullins, Ben Shelton squared to bunt, but Mullins threw way inside. Although Shelton was trying to get out of the way of the pitch, the ball hit the knob of the bat and went for a perfect sacrifice, advancing the runners.
Mike Huyler singled to drive in Estep, tying the score. Then, with Rob Bailey squaring for a suicide squeeze attempt, Mullins uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Pennye to score easily from third with the winning run.
"Maybe our luck's changing," said Stan Cliburn, the Bucs' manager. "We got breaks on both ends. It wasn't an ideal win, but the way we've been going I take them any way."
Tom Deller pitched the ninth to pick up the save.
