CAP SEARCH FOR 6 MISSING IN PLANE STILL ON

Civil Air Patrol units searched parts of Northern Virginia and Maryland Friday for a missing single-engine plane carrying six Virginia men, authorities reported.

Federal Aviation Administration officials said the Cessna 210 did not file a flight plan before it left the Manteo, N.C., airport about 1 a.m. Thursday.

CAP officials said the search area extended from Richmond north to Washington and into adjoining Maryland counties.

FAA spokesman Duncan Pardue in New York said the plane's last contact was with flight controllers in Leesburg about 2:45 a.m.

The Leesburg center handles flights in the Washington metropolitan area and had picked up a signal coming from the plane.

Authorities have not released the names of those thought to be aboard the aircraft. The men were traveling together on a pleasure trip.

Lt. Linda Utting at CAP search headquarters set up at the Manassas Airport said the Virginia State Police, other law enforcement authorities and volunteers are participating in the search.

The plane was reported missing Thursday when family members told authorities it did not arrive at scheduled stops in Winchester, Leesburg and Gaithersburg, Md.

Officials said they did not receive an "emergency position locator" signal from the plane. Most aircraft are equipped with the device which sends a signal to area authorities when a plane crashes.
