The man also apparently first stole a car from the parking lot at Rose's department store, drove to the bank and later ditched the stolen car at a parking lot across the street from Rose's. He then drove off in another car, which police believe may belong to the man.
Christiansburg police and FBI agents were still looking Friday evening for the man, but they said they did not have a description of him or his car.
About 1:30 p.m., the man walked into the bank on Roanoke Street near Hills department store wearing a camouflage Army jacket, a burgundy ski hat and a Halloween mask, police said.
With his hand in a plastic bag, he aimed a pointed object concealed within the bag at one of the tellers. He said it was a gun and requested money. A teller handed over the money and the man drove off.
Police Chief Ron Lemons said he could not disclose how much money the man got, and that police were not sure whether he actually had a gun.
The bank was closed immediately.
The stolen car, which belonged to an employee at Rose's, was abandoned at the lot at the Food Lion Plaza on North Franklin Street. It was returned apparently undamaged, police said.
