SALEM CHIEF R.T. HARTMAN TO LEAVE POST

Salem Fire Chief Ronald T. Hartman, 58, announced Friday that he will retire Aug. 1 after 36 years with the city Fire Department.

Hartman began his career in 1954 as a firefighter. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1963 and chief in 1969.

Hartman has overseen a revamping of the department's training program, formation of a Hazardous Materials Response Team and the First Responder Program, in which firefighters respond on rescue squad calls to assist in patient treatment.

Hartman received the Congressional Fire Services Award from Sen. John Warner earlier this year for implementing the responder program.

Hartman also has served as the city's emergency services coordinator.

City Manager Randy Smith appointed Capt. Dan Hall to succeed Hartman. Hall, a 19-year employee of the Salem Fire Department, has been the department's training officer for the last seven years.

Hall also serves on the Virginia Department of Emergency Services' Hazardous Materials Budget Advisory Committee.

And he serves on the state Hazardous Materials Training Advisory Committee.

Hall has served as deputy emergency services coordinator since 1987.
