EXPLORE COULD LET PEOPLE LEARN OF AREA

YOUR ARTICLE May 1 about Explore failed to take into account the positive contribution the project will make to the economy of the whole area.

Thousands of travelers enjoy the scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway. They camp, stay overnight at an inn, or just drive from the entrance to the end without knowing of or having access to the beauty of the mountains as one looks up at them from the valley.

I believe that if we work for and with the Explore Project, those who travel the parkway will be made aware that Roanoke has an excellent symphony orchestra, a science museum, unusually fine shops and restaurants, a beautiful farmers' market, and last but not least, our Mill Mountain Theater. Then there is the Festival in the Park.

The nearby villages and surroundings have much to offer: the Vinton Dogwood Festival; our fine colleges and universities; the beautiful Poplar Forest, designed by Thomas Jefferson as his summer home; and the birthplace of George Washington Carver.

I have just returned from Texas, where I attended the San Antonio Spring Festival. San Antonio has the Alamo, but it also has the nationally known River Walk, which became a reality because caring people planned and worked for a project that has benefited their beautiful city and brings pleasure to the thousands of people who go there throughout the year.
