POOLS APLENTY FOR VALLEY SWIMMERS

The New River and Claytor Lake are great for swimming, but for those who prefer pools there are plenty of choices.

The pools traditionally open around Memorial Day weekend.

Hours and admission prices vary. Here are most of the area's pools:

\ Montgomery County

Blacksburg Municipal Pool on Graves Avenue will open June 10 and be open to the public seven days a week from 1 to 5 p.m.

Admission is 75 cents for children ages 3 to 14 and $1 for those 15 and older.

Blacksburg Country Club pool, off Virginia 723 (Ellett Valley Road in Blacksburg), will open May 26 and close Labor Day weekend.

The pool, open to members and guests only, will operate seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a few exceptions early in the season. For more information on pool hours or membership, call 552-8426.

Alta Mons Methodist Camp, about 6 1/2 miles off U.S. 11 on Virginia 637 in Shawsville, is planning to open to the public on weekends beginning May 28.

Saturday hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday hours from 1 to 6 p.m. Swimming is free for those under 4; 75 cents for those ages 4 to 7 and $1.25 for those 8 and older.

Virginia Tech's War Memorial Gym pool, on the Virginia Tech campus, is open year-round for students, faculty members and their families. Two guests are admitted per person.

Regular hours for first summer school session are 12-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Hours will vary throughout the rest of the summer and year. For more information call 231-6856.

Montgomery County Department of Parks and Recreation pool will open May 27 and close Sept. 4. It will be open to the public from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Daily admission is 50 cents for preschoolers, $1 for students in kindergarten through high school and senior citizens and $1.50 for adults.

Season passes are available for $30 for an individual and $100 for a family. Passbooks for 10 swims are $4 for preschoolers, $9 for students K-12 and senior citizens and $11 for adults.

The pool, in the recreation complex in Christiansburg off U.S. 460, offers swimming lessons for adults and children, a Lap Club, a scuba diving course, basic water safety and rescue courses and advanced lifesaving. For more information call 382-6975.

\ Radford

Radford Department of Parks and Recreation pool in Bissett Park off U.S. 11 is open to the public. It opens May 29 and closes Labor Day weekend.

The pool will be open from 1 to 8:30 p.m. May 27-29 and from 3 to 7 p.m. May 30 through June 2.

On June 3, the pool will begin its regular season hours: Monday through Thursday, 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m.; Friday, 1 to 5 p.m.; and weekends, 1 to 8:30 p.m. Friday after 5 p.m., the pool is available for private parties.

Daily cost is $1 for adults and 75 cents for children. Evening swim is 75 cents for adults and 50 cents for children. Books of 10-swim tickets are available for $7.50 for adults and $5 for children.

During the morning hours, the pool will offer swimming classes for all ages. For more information on swimming lessons or booking the pool for private parties, call the Recreation Department at 731-3633.

Radford University has two pools: the Dedmon Center Natatorium and the Peters Hall pool.

The pool at the Dedmon Center is open year-round to Radford University students, faculty and some members of the athletic association.

Pool hours during the school year are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 11 to 9 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 10 p.m.

During summer, the pool is open all week from 1 to 8 p.m. For more information call 831-5240.

The Peters Hall pool is open year-round to students and faculty on a limited basis. The pool is primarily used in the university's academic program and is contracted out to various organizations.

Free swim periods for students and faculty vary according to semester and sometimes day to day but usually are set during late afternoon and evening hours. For more information on pool access call 831-5297.

\ Pulaski County

The Hensel Eckman YMCA indoor pool, located on Oakhurst Avenue near the Pulaski Middle School in Pulaski, is open year-round to the public.

Hours are Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The pool will be closed on Sundays.

YMCA members are admitted free when they present their membership card. Cost for non-members is $3 for children, $5 for adults and $10 for a family. The YMCA welcomes all prospective members. For more information call 980-3671.

\ Giles County

The Wolf Creek Park swimming hole on Park Drive in Narrows will be open May 27 through Labor Day weekend. The swimming area is open to the public during park hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission to the park, swimming included, is free. Picnic shelters may be rented for $60 a day or $30 for a half day. Picnic tables are rented for $1 an hour or $5 for all day.

Pearisburg Municipal Pool, on Wenonah Avenue, will open May 28 and close Labor Day weekend.

The pool is open to the public and hours will be noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday after school ends. It will be open from 3 to 6 p.m. while school is in session.

Admission prices have not been set for this summer.

The pool will offer swimming lessons for all ages during morning and evening hours, as well as scuba diving lessons and advanced lifesaving. For more information on lessons call 921-3527 or the pool number, 921-2347.

Castle Rock Recreation Facility pool, on Virginia 626 off U.S. 460 in Pembroke, plans to open June 1 and be open each weekend until school ends, then will be open from noon to 6 p.m. daily.

The pool is open to the public and admission is $1 per person. Swimming classes may be offered for all ages during morning hours.

The pool is available for private parties from 6 p.m. to dusk. For information on booking the pool for private parties call 626-7276.

\ Floyd County

Great Oaks Country Club, on U.S. 221 in Floyd County, is open to members only. The pool will be open the weekends of May 27-29 and June 3-4 and then every day from June 7 until Labor Day weekend.

Daily hours for the summer are: noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; noon to 8:30 on Tuesday and Thursday.

Swimming classes at the pool will be organized. For information on membership call 745-2189.
