HOW, WHERE, WHEN TO GET A DRIVER'S LICENSE

Newcomers to the New River Valley from another state are required to obtain a Virginia driver's license and register their vehicles in the state within 30 days of their arrival, if they intend to stay permanently.

Currently, a driver's license costs $12 for five years. Annual Vehicle registration is $25 for vehicles up to 4,000 pounds, and $30 for vehicles over 4,000 pounds. Personalized vanity plates are $10 more a year.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles has offices in Christiansburg and Pulaski to serve the New River Valley. Both offices sell automobile licenses and issue driver's licenses and renewals five days a week.

The hours for DMV offices statewide are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The Christiansburg office is located on Virginia 114 at Walters Drive west of the New River Valley Mall. The telephone number is 382-5000.

The Pulaski office is at 1901 Bob White Blvd. at Warden Lane. The telephone number is 980-3550.

The DMV also has a licensing agent and an examination station in the courthouses in Giles and Floyd counties.

The licensing agent operates daily in both locations. The telephone number for Pearisburg is 921-1240. The number for Floyd is 745-4146.

The examination station, which administers tests for driver's licenses, is open on specific days. In Pearisburg, it's Wednesday. Its telephone number is 921-9844. In Floyd, it's the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. The station has no telephone.
