CENTERS KEEP SENIORS ACTIVE

As the New River Valley area becomes known more and more as a retirement community, the senior citizen centers must provide activities for the elderly to enjoy.

Favorite activities for many New River Valley senior citizens include anything from playing cards to ceramics to special arts and crafts classes to going on mall or scenic trips.

The Giles Senior Center in Pearisburg, toward the end of this month, will sponsor a swim aerobics class three to four times a week throughout the summer, said senior center Director Betty Letsinger.

The Giles County center also will sponsor a class to make dolls out of dish towels May 25. The class will be taught by Barbara Caldwell and will cost $8-$10 for materials, she said.

Horseshoes, croquet and walking are another favorite activity for seniors during the summer months, Letsinger said.

The Radford Senior Center will sponsor a rummage sale the end of this month to raise money for a new carpet at the center, said Director Mary Jane Harmon.

"The senior citizens plan, price items and have a lot of fun," participating in the event, she said.

Trips planned during the summer months include visits to Mountain Lake, Roanoke, Pipestem and Mercer Mall in West Virginia, she said.

Longer trips planned in conjunction with All American Tours include a five-day trip to Michigan, a 16-day trip to Colorado and a one-day trip to sightsee at Smith Mountain Lake, she said.

"There are plenty of openings available," Harmon said.

The Christiansburg Senior Center, in conjunction with the town parks and recreation department, will provide various activities all summer long.

They include shopping and matinee trips to area malls, miniature golf, private viewing of local plant nursery, a jewelry exhibit, a picnic at the Cascades, oil painting exhibits, a trip to Barter Theatre and the Marsha Washington Inn in Abingdon, and a visit to Pipestem State Park in West Virginia.

Classes the center and the parks and recreation department sponsor include ballroom dancing, water aerobics, bingo bashes, cholesterol screening, "Christmas In July Ornament Workshop," and much more.
