Nearly 10 weeks after Hank Gathers collapsed during a game and later died, the athlete's family returned to receive his posthumous bachelor's degree from Loyola Marymount, the college against which the family has filed a $32.5 million negligence suit.

It was an event marked by deep emotion and painful contradictions for both the Gathers family and the school, a 76-year-old Jesuit institution that Gathers had helped bring to national prominence.

Gathers' 1,172 classmates heard Barbara J. Busse, the associate academic vice president, say: "Loyola Marymount University is proud to confer the degree of Bachelor of Arts on Eric Hank Gathers."
