HENSLEY CAPTURES PACESETTERS 300

Jimmy Hensley of Ridgeway, Va., drove his Oldsmobile to victory Saturday in the Pontiac Pacesetters 300 NASCAR Busch Grand National race at Pennsylvania International Raceway.

Hensley took the lead from Dave Rezendes in the third turn on lap 293 of the 300-mile race on the one-mile tri-oval before a crowd of 12,000. He finished 0.89 seconds ahead of Rezendes with an average speed of 95.685 mph. The victory was worth $18,339 from a purse of $157,138.

It was the first victory on the Busch circuit this season for Hensley and his first since 1988 at Martinsville, Va. His best finish this season had been fourth place in four races.

Hensley took the overall lead in Grand National points, with 1,479. He went into the race tied for the lead with Bobby Labonte.

Chuck Bown finished third Saturday. Morgan Shepherd was fourth, and Steve Grissom was fifth.

Hensley was among the top five drivers throughout the race and one of seven leaders.

Rezendes took the lead on lap 237 after a caution flag and held on for 56 laps. It was his best finish ever on the Busch circuit, bettering a sixth-place finish at Gainesville, Fla., this year.

There were no caution flags through the first 65 laps, but there were 11 caution flags for 56 laps the rest of the way.

The race was marred by five accidents, but there were no serious injuries.

Pole-sitter Davey Allison, who set a track record of 124.106 mph in qualifying, finished 10th overall. Allison led three times for a total of 52 laps.

Grissom held the lead for 99 laps of the race from 30 to 129. Hensley took the lead on lap 129 and was passed by Davey Johnson after a caution flag on lap 139.

Bown took the lead out of a caution flag on lap 150 and led for the next 28 laps. Allison regained the lead on lap 178 before Kenny Wallace was the leader after another caution on lap 227.
