The meals tax would go from 3 to 4 percent. The increase would generate an estimated $156,000 for the town's general fund.
Minimum water and sewer rates would increase by $3.66 per month for people using up to 2,000 gallons of water per month, with rates further increasing as use increases on a scale. Council is also planning to bill users monthly instead of quarterly, as they are billed now.
The water and sewer rate increases would generate an additional $240,000 to help on many water and sewer capital improvement projects under way.
The proposed budget is a $7 million increase over the current one, with most of the increase coming from sewage treatment plant expansion, a sewer project in west Wytheville and work on the town's swimming pool.
