NEW RIVER PEOPLE

BILL JENNINGS, a member of Boy Scout Troop 268 in Shawsville, was given his Eagle rank award during an Eagle Jennings Court of Honor at White Memorial United Methodist Church.

Jennings, a freshman honor student at Shawsville High School, is a member of the Order of the Arrow for honor scouts. He is the son of Harold and Jean Jennings of Elliston and the grandson of Blanche Shiflett of Christiansburg.

Five New River Valley artists had their work accepted in the Eleventh Virginia Watercolor Society's Jurored Exhibition May 20-June 15 at the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts. The artists are\ NADINE C. ALLEN of Blacksburg,\ JEAN R. NELSON of Christiansburg,\ MARY TARR WHITEHURST of Draper,\ Z.L. FENG and\ MEI SHU , both of Radford.

New officers for the Virginia Highlands Chapter of the American Guild of Organists are:\ VIRGINIA TUBBS, dean;\ MARILYN MEADOR, sub dean;\ KATHRYN HOLLANDSWORTH, secretary-treasurer;\ KATHERINE BURKHART, newsletter editor, and\ KATHRYN OBENSHAIN, chairman for educational and professional concerns.

\ CECE M. YOURSHAW, a Virginia Tech graduate and Blacksburg resident, has become quality improvement coordinator at Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Yourshaw was the supervisor of management and training and a quality cost coordinator for three years. She received a masters degree in business administration from Tech.

\ ROSALIE B. PAIGE of Christiansburg retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 23 years of service. She was a security patrol officer. She and her husband, William F. Paige, have 13 children.

\ DON J. STAMMERS of Dublin retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant as quality control operator after 34 years of service. He and his wife, Ethel Stammers, have two children. He plans to hunt, fish and farm cattle.

\ LEONA W. HOBBS of Dublin retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 25 years of service. She was a purification area operator in the nitrocellulose area. She and her husband, Harrison Hobbs, have two children.

\ GEORGE A. WALKER, a propellant incinerator control operator, retired after 18 years of service at Radford Army Ammunition Plant. He and his wife, Ruth Walker, live in Radford and have three children and four grandchildren.

\ MILDRED H. WHITT of Pulaski retired after 21 years at Radford Army Ammunition Plant. She was chief poacher operator in the nitrocellulose area. She and her husband, Carl Whitt, have seven children and 12 grandchildren.

\ OAKLEY N. BANES, an inert-gas operator in the propellant department at Radford Army Ammunition Plant, retired after 38 years of service. He and his wife, Frances Banes, live in Pulaski and have one son.

\ JENNIFER SGRO, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sgro of Blacksburg, has been elected student vice head of Foxcroft School in Middleburg, an independent boarding school for girls.

\ MRS. RICHARD H. HORNE of Christiansburg was named outstanding junior member of the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists. She received the Outstanding Golden Acorn Award at the General Assembly of the DAC in Washington, D.C. in April for work on behalf of the national society. Horne is the regent of the Dunkard Bottom chapter.

\ WILLIAM R. WALKER, director of the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, received the American Society of Civil Engineers' Julian Hinds Award for contributions to water resources development. An engineer and lawyer, he has been director of the center since its establishment in 1965. He has been active in many organizations and has been published extensively in engineering and scientific journals.

The Radford Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa honored two outstanding professional educators at its annual initiation and awards banquet in April.\ THORA JERVEY, an elementary school teacher in Pulaski County, was named Outstanding Professional Educator of the Year. She has taught for 24 years, helped establish a minipark and library in Radford and worked for underprivileged youth in Radford.

\ WILLIAM DUGGER, JR., a professor of vocational and technical education at Virginia Tech, has been recognized as the Phi Delta Kappa member of the year. He is completing his final term as the area coordinator for District 8B Phi Delta Kappa chapters.

\ JULIE MARTIN, a junior education major from Lebanon at Radford University, is the first recipient of the Phi Delta Kappa Robert J. Young Memorial Scholarship.

The Radford Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa gave certificates of excellence to five student educators: graduate students\ LINDA WALLACE of Rocky Mount and\ GREG DESKINS of Radford; senior education majors\ BRENDA BYRD of Blacksburg,\ ROBERTA KEYSER of Hot Springs and\ LINDA RICHARDSON of Manassas.

\ STEVEN POWELL, son of Dr. and Mrs. Norris L. Powell of Blacksburg and a senior at the College of William and Mary, was elected to the Virginia chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. He is a member of the Society of Collegiate Journalists and the Gamma Sigma Epsilon chemistry honor society. He majors in chemistry and English and plans to pursue a graduate degree in chemistry at Stanford University.

\ WENDY JEAN COX of Blacksburg has been initiated into the honor society of Phi Beta Kappa at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a junior majoring in psychology and economics.
