VIRGINIA POWER MAKES PLANS FOR COAL-FIRED PLANT

Virginia Power Monday said it plans to select a site for a 400-megawatt coal-fired generating unit by the end of the year and it is negotiating to buy 442 megawatts of power from non-utility companies.

The company unit, to be at one of three sites being evaluated in Mecklenburg, Greensville and Cumberland counties, is to be in operation by 1997. It would provide power for 100,000 homes.

Talks started Monday with developers, selected from among 78 proposals, for two cogeneration projects using coal gasification and pulverized coal, as well as a municipal waste-to-energy plant. The locations won't be reported until a contract is signed, according to Carl Baab of Virginia Power.
