MILK PRODUCTION DOWN, SALES UP, REPORT SAYS

Milk production dropped last year, but higher prices boosted sales receipts of dairy farmers to a record level, according to an Agriculture Department report.

Overall, milk output in 1989 declined 1 percent to about 144.3 billion pounds from a record of 145.2 billion pounds in 1988, the report said. But cash receipts from milk sales rose 10 percent to $19.4 billion, eclipsing the old record of $18.5 billion set in 1983.
