KIM-STAN SOIL MAY BE COVERED

The state may take over leachate disposal and place a temporary cover of soil on the closed Kim-Stan landfill in Alleghany County, the director of the Department of Waste Management said Monday.

Cynthia Bailey said her agency and the State Water Control Board are considering stepping in if the company pulls out.

"Our sense is that the company doesn't have any assets with which to do the work, so we may be looking at doing some things ourselves," Bailey said.

One question to be answered is whether enough state money is available.
