U.S. and Albanian officials met recently to discuss establishing normal relations, the first official contact between the two countries in more than 50 years, an official said Monday. The meeting occurred shortly after Albania's Marxist government said it was prepared to seek normal relations with both the United States and the Soviet Union.

Nelson Mandela, the leader of South Africa's black majority, will visit the United States next month for talks with President Bush and to be honored with a ticker tape parade in New York City, organizers of the trip said Monday. Mandela, recently freed from 27 years in jail, arrives in the United States on June 20 to visit Washington and four other cities, said officials of his African National Congress.
