JUDGE TO KEEP SALARY DURING APPEAL PROCESS

Norfolk General District Judge Joseph Campbell will keep his $79,295 annual salary while he appeals his felony conviction for altering a traffic ticket, a judicial panel decided Monday.

The Committee on District Courts, a policy-making group of five legislators and three judges, decided after an executive session that Campbell would be allowed to remain on administrative leave with pay.

Campbell, 61, has been on leave with pay since he was indicted in September. He was convicted by a Norfolk Circuit Court jury April 26 of forgery and malfeasance in office for ordering a traffic ticket altered in March 1989.

The ticket was issued to former Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Sciortino during a re-election campaign in which his driving record was an issue. Sciortino dropped out of the race after the ticket-altering incident.

The jury recommended that Campbell be sentenced to four years in prison and fined $1,000.
