DARRELL SHELL, COUNTY PARKS OFFICIAL, DIES

Darrell Shell, Roanoke County's first director of parks and recreation, died Monday. He was 63.

Shell, who inaugurated the department after park funding was approved in a 1967 bond referendum, headed the department for about 20 years. He was still employed by the county at the time of his death.

He also had served as president of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society and in 1981 received the society's Fellows Award, given to those who have made significant contributions to the recreation field.

A memorial service for Shell will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Walrond Park.
