The sixth-seeded Cavaliers (21-31-1) remained alive in the double-elimination tournament. Fourth-seeded Wake Forest (35-23-2) was eliminated.
Virginia continued its surprisingly strong pitching during the tournament, with winning pitcher Todd Rulyak (3-2), allowing just five hits in six innings before yielding to Keith Seiler, who earned his seventh save.
Except for a three-run rally in the sixth and one run in the eighth, the Cavaliers kept Wake Forest's hitters at bay. Wake second baseman Danny Martz belted a three-run homer, his eighth of the season, in the sixth inning.
Virginia will play North Carolina today, regardless of the outcome of Monday night's game between the Tar Heels and Clemson. Virginia 001006100-8131 Wake Forest 000003010-481
