AGENCY URGES AIRLINES' CREDIT UNION MERGER

The federal agency that insures credit unions says it would prefer a merger of USAir and Piedmont Airlines credit unions, but the two organizations haven't been successful in reaching a compromise.

Unlike the airlines, their credit unions failed to work out a merger nine months ago. A meeting in April 1989 wiped out a yearlong effort to reach an agreement.

Now Piedmont Aviation Credit Union, the last remnant of the carrier that was based in Winston-Salem, is competing head-to-head with its USAir counterpart, USAir Federal.

USAir could not force the two to merge because they are legally separate from the company, officials said.
