SALEM NETTERS DOMINATE

Salem dominated the team and individual championships to win the Region III boys' tennis tournament Tuesday at Magna Vista High in Ridgeway.

The Spartans defeated Jefferson Forest 6-3 in the team final and will advance to the Group AA Tournament next week against Region IV champion Marion. The individual singles and doubles winners also advance to the state tournament.

Tommy McDonald of Salem won the individual singles crown, crushing Jesus Nevarez of Rustburg 6-0, 6-3. McDonald teamed with Justin Barham to win the doubles crown, besting Thom Ferguson and Glen Keener of Jefferson Forest 6-4, 6-1.

In other boys' tennis:

Woodbridge eliminated Cave Spring 5-4 in the team semifinals of the Group AAA Northwestern Region tournament at Stonewall Jackson High in Manassas. Cave Spring won the first three singles matches but could win only one doubles match the rest of the way.

In individual play, Scott Hawes of Cave Spring and the doubles team of Del Turner and Morris Masinter of Patrick Henry saw their seasons end. Peter Boguad of Stafford eliminated Hawes 6-3, 6-2 in the singles semifinals, and Turner-Masinter dropped its semifinal match (no score available) to Paul Colangelo and Andy West of Potomac.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: Salem defeated Martinsville 8-1 in the team final and Doris Ballak and Kristi Garren were the individual winners in Region III competition at Salem High.

Ballak won the individual singles title with a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Paige Witt of Fieldale-Collinsville. Ballak and Garren teamed for a 6-4, 6-4 win against Witt and Jennifer Tilley of F-C in the doubles final.

The winners will advance to the Group AA Tournament May 23-24 at Radford University's Dedmon Center.

\ BASEBALL: Tony Powell pitched a five-hitter and Mark Mills doubled in the only run necessary as Pulaski County blanked William Fleming 3-0 in the first round of the Roanoke Valley District tournament at Cave Spring.

Pulaski will play top-seeded Cave Spring in a semifinal game Friday at 10:30 a.m. Patrick Henry will face Franklin County in the other semifinal at 1:30, with the winners meeting at 5:30 for the championship. All games will be at Cave Spring.

\ SOFTBALL: Shelley Bowles had eight strikeouts and hit a two-run homer in leading Franklin County to a 9-0 shutout of host Cave Spring.

Cave Spring (6-3 in the Roanoke Valley District, 9-9 overall) faces Patrick Henry at 2 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the district tournament in Rocky Mount. Host Franklin County (8-1, 17-1) plays William Fleming at 11 a.m. The two winners play at 5 p.m. for the district championship.

\ GOLF: Carlisle won the Virginia Independent Conference tournament at Ole Monterey with a 314 total, 11 shots better than Hargrave Military Academy. North Cross was third at 335, followed by Fishburne Military Academy (345), Lynchburg Christian Academy (362), Randolph-Macon (385), Roanoke Valley Christian (401) and Roanoke Catholic (431).

North Cross was led by Andy Berry and Kevin Garbee at 81. RVC was led by Kevin Smith and Brad Suhr at 97. Scott Michie and Tony Williams topped Catholic with 99s.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Kim Butts had three goals as home team Woodbridge crushed Cave Spring 12-0 in the Northwestern Region first round. Woodbridge will play host to the winner between Gar-field and Albemarle on Thursday at 7 p.m.
