ROANOKE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES APPROPRIATION

Roanoke School Board members unanimously approved a general budget appropriation from City Council of $63.8 million for the 1990-91 school year on Tuesday night.

The appropriation includes an $829,600 supplement to expand the school district's full-day kindergarten program, hire extra remedial teachers, have full-time principals at every school and begin phasing in a seven-period day, up from six.

The budget includes a 5.1 percent scale raise for teachers, together with a 1.5 percent tier raise, which is given to teachers based on their years of employment in the district. Administrators and non-teaching employees will get a 3 percent scale raise and a 5 percent tier raise.
