GOVERNMENT TO PAY BATTLEFIELD EX-OWNERS

The Justice Department said Tuesday it has reached a partial settlement with the owners of about 150 acres taken by Congress two years ago to protect a Civil War battlefield.

The department said it had agreed to pay more than $30 million plus interest to the owners of the land near the Manassas Battlefield Park to partially settle lawsuits arising from the dispute.

The land was taken by an act of Congress in 1988.

William Center Limited Partnership will receive $24 million plus more than $3 million in interest. NVHomes Limited Partnership will be paid $6 million plus $800,000 interest, the department said.

The government was still negotiating with the owners of 368 additional acres also taken by Congress, Stewart said.
