STUDENTS' TRAFFIC IDEA WINS $17,000

A team of Woodbridge High School students has won $17,000 for coming up with the best idea for solving traffic problems in the Washington, D.C., area.

The communications company Contel, which sponsored the competition, announced the award Tuesday.

Woodbridge's solution was to "Take the commuter out of the commute" by creating "SateLink" office buildings in the suburbs. Instead of commuting downtown, workers would travel to these offices, which would be connected to their central office via the latest in satellites and cables. The team estimated its plan would cut commuter traffic in the region by about 20 percent. - Associated Press
