It is aimed at the needs of working adults with at least 62 semester-hours of prior college credit.
"There is a need in the community to offer non-traditional educational options to the working adult," said Rebecca Watson, vice president for academic affairs. "This program will allow us to help meet the need."
She said the program would concentrate on the Southwest Virginia and immediate Bristol areas. The first class is expected to have about 24 participants.
The program's required 33-semester-hour curriculum can be completed in a little more than a year. Students will meet once a week for a four-hour class, and will be encouraged to share on-the-job learning experiences.
Watson said students will be able to earn credit for past experiences. "Students will be reviewed by a faculty member with expertise in the area where credit is being requested," she said. "We will only award credit for past experience that can be considered comparable with what would be learned on the college level."
Management, statistics, accounting, marketing, organizational strategy and other business-related courses will be taught. Graduates will get a bachelor of science degree in organizational management.
Tuition will be less than $6,000 for the full 33 semester-hour credits, not counting various other related fees. "We feel the program is very reasonable and presents a much more realistic and affordable option than leaving work and returning to school full time," said Watson.
Student recruitment is expected to begin early in June.
