BLUE DEMONS GIVE RADFORD ROYAL PAIN

Mike Royal put on a spectacular show while leading Christiansburg to a 12-2 victory and to a showdown with Carroll County for the New River District baseball tournament championship.

The Cavaliers defeated Giles 15-12 in the other semifinal, which was played in Pearisburg.

Royal put on a powerful performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and seven runs batted in. Royal's second homer was a grand slam, and he scored three runs.

On the mound, he dazzled the Bobcats (8-11), striking out 14 while walking three and allowing one hit.

Mike Reavis hit a grand slam, Matt Montgomery added a three-run homer and Andy Stockner hit a two-run shot for Carroll County in its semifinal. Jared Wilburn hit two homers and John Hunt added one for Giles.

In other baseball:

At Moneta, Tim Mason drew a bases-loaded walk to score Chris Guth with one out in the bottom of the seventh, giving Alleghany a 6-5 victory over William Byrd in the Blue Ridge District tournament championship game.

The Mountaineers advance to the Region III tournament next week at Altavista, along with regular-season champion Lord Botetourt.

Alleghany advanced to the final with a 4-1 victory over host Staunton River earlier Wednesday. In the other semifinal, Brian Young and Travis Lang combined on a one-hitter as Byrd beat Botetourt 5-3, handing Cavaliers ace Bobby Prince (6-1) his first loss.

\ SOCCER: At Bedford, Scott Brammer scored three goals, Robbie Scharpf had two and Shawn Niday added a goal and four assists to lead William Byrd to a 10-0 drubbing of Jefferson Forest in a Region III soccer tournament semifinal.

The Terriers (14-2) will meet Martinsville, a 3-2 winner over Nelson County in the other semifinal, in Friday's region championship game.
