GUARDSMEN JOIN SEARCH FOR PLANE

Gov. Douglas Wilder called out the National Guard on Wednesday to help in a nearly weeklong search in Northern Virginia for a missing plane carrying six men.

Wilder "cares deeply about the missing men and their loved ones and hopes that the additional assistance offered by the National Guard will expedite the rescue," his office said in a statement.

Three helicopters, each with a crew of three, were sent to help with the search, said Capt. Stewart MacInnis, a spokesman for the guard. He said they will operate out of the Manassas airport, where the search effort is based.

The guard joins the Civil Air Patrol, the Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference, the Virginia State Police, the Coast Guard, Marines from the Quantico Marine Corps base and the Department of Emergency Services in searching for the plane.

The six-seat, red-and-white Cessna 210 was carrying six Washington-area men home from a fishing trip on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The plane was bound for Winchester; Gaithersburg, Md.; and finally Leesburg. The craft was last heard from over Richmond about an hour after departing Manteo, N.C., at 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

The CAP has not confirmed the identities of the six men at the request of the family members.
