BARRY'S LAWYER SEEKS DISMISSAL OF CHARGES

Mayor Marion Barry's lawyer is seeking dismissal of the half dozen new drug and conspiracy charges against his client.

R. Kenneth Mundy filed the motion for dismissal Wednesday after Barry pleaded innocent a day earlier to six additional charges brought against him.

Mundy complained that the new charges would not allow the mayor's defense team to prepare adequately for the trial scheduled to begin in U.S. District Court in Washington on June 4.

The lawyer maintains that the six new charges are "vindictive and an undue burden" because they were brought just three weeks before the trial date.

The new charges accuse Barry of five misdemeanor counts of cocaine possession and one misdemeanor count of conspiracy.
