RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. DR. JOE LINDSOE , will retire from the pastorate of Melrose Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in June. The veteran of more than 37 years in the ministry came to Melrose in 1981 after 19 years at First Christian Church of Rocky Mount.

He also previously served as an institutional chaplain and spent a year in Australia in an exchange pastorate. His wife, Betty, has been a Franklin County teacher. The Lindsoes will live at Smith Mountain Lake.

\ WEEKDAY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION in Botetourt County will be benefited by three fund-raising events Saturday . Handicrafts, food and arts will be sold beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Gala Grocery, Sovran Bank of Troutville and Limestone Park at Buchanan. The WRE program provides Protestant teaching off school property for elementary school pupils and is supported by many churches.

\ A BIBLICAL ECONOMICS SEMINAR is scheduled May 29-June 2 at Valley Word Ministries, 1928 Loch Haven Drive. John and Patricia Avanzini of Trinity Broadcasting Network will lead the seminar. Four evening programs will begin at 7:30. Three morning sessions also will be held. Call 562-1500 to register. The seminars emphasize management of money for the individual and the church.

\ WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN AMERICA will dedicate a new electronic organ Sunday at 5 p.m. The service will include a recital by Gary Lowe, organist at Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg and representative of the company which built the instrument. The church is at 2216 Peters Creek Road.

\ THE REV. ORLANDO GONZALEZ has been promoted from assistant to associate pastor of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church. His special duties are in youth leadership.

\ THE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN DISASTER PROJECT still has teams in South Carolina cleaning up after Hurricane Hugo. Nineteen adults from Virlina District worked at Copahee in late March, and 16 people are needed there June 4-9. To volunteer for a team, call 366-9280. Other Brethren teams are being formed to work in the Virgin Islands and in Selma, Ala.

\ THREE WILLIAMSON ROAD CHURCHES, Trinity Lutheran, St. James Episcopal and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox, will sponsor a joint vacation Bible school June 25-29. Sessions will be at the Lutheran church, Williamson Road at Epperly Avenue. Call 366-9481 for more information.

\ A PLEDGE DRIVE has begun to put an FM radio station on the air. The station would broadcast contemporary Christian music 24 hours a day. Mac Miller of Vision Communications, Inc. is leading an effort to get 800 people to pledge $25 monthly. A teen group at Cornerstone Church is among the supporters of the proposed station, which is seen as an alternative to "satanic" secular songs.

\ A CHORAL PROGRAM Sunday will recognize the 17th anniversary of the Male Chorus of Pilgrim Baptist Church and will feature several guests. The program will start at 4 p.m. at the church at 1238 Rugby Blvd. N.W.

\ CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH, 1502 Staunton Ave. N.W. will observe homecoming May 27. The Rev. Lyle Morton and the choir of Missionary Baptist Church of New River will lead worship at 3 p.m.

\ GOSPEL MUSIC will be presented May 27 at 5 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 2910 Cove Road N.W. The Gospel Chorus of Spring Hill Baptist Church of Brookneal will perform.

\ DISCOVER MEDITATION, a program to enrich spiritual growth through self-inquiry, is scheduled at Unity of Roanoke Valley, 3300 Green Ridge Road N.W. Elizabeth MacDonald, co-founder of the Association Happiness for All Mankind, will speak during sessions at 9 and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday . On June 16, she will speak from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The Association for Happiness for All Mankind in Greensboro, N.C., is an organization that attempts to help people achieve their full potential.
