CARNIVAL, MUSIC TO MARK OPENING OF GREEN HILL PARK

The grand opening of Roanoke County's Green Hill Park this week will feature a carnival midway, antique cars and hot rods, hot-air balloons and live music.

The midway will be open from 6 until 9 p.m. today and Friday and from 11 a.m. until late in the evening on Saturday.

Opening ceremonies will be held at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the park's picnic area.

The Kings, a popular Top 40 band from Roanoke, and Blackwater, a variety band from Richmond, will perform Saturday afternoon. There also will be a class-judged antique car show; children's activities with clowns, McGruff the crime dog and U.S. Marines; an arts and crafts fair; and equestrian events.

Anyone bringing two cans of food on Saturday gets a free ride in a tethered hot-air balloon. The food will be donated to Roanoke Area Ministries. There will be a special aerial balloon display at 6 p.m.

Admission to the park will be free. There will be a charge to ride on the midway.

The 225-acre park, which is off U.S. 11/460 west of Salem, is the county's largest. It has four baseball fields, a T-ball field, a soon-to-be-completed soccer field and an equestrian center with an outdoor show ring. The county has spent $1.3 million so far to buy the land and develop the park.

More sports fields, trails and an expanded equestrian center are planned.

Green Hill Park was the site of a 5-kilometer race last fall and a beach music festival in the summer of 1988.

To get to the park, turn onto Diuguids Lane off U.S. 460. The park is south of the railroad tracks and the Roanoke River.
