"Youth service tells young people they are needed, appeals to their desire to participate and gives them an opportunity to make a difference," said David Liederman, executive director of the Child Welfare League of America Inc.
The support boosts efforts of the House Education and Labor Committee, which is preparing to consider legislation that puts it at odds with a Senate-passed bill tying youth community work with student financial aid.
The House bill would authorize $35 million for school-based programs that make community service an important element of learning; $25 million in grants to institutions of higher education to create or expand service opportunities for their students; $30 million for demonstration programs targeted to school dropouts and rural youth; and $93 million to establish three specific youth oriented demonstration programs.
