DOMINICAN CANDIDATE ACCUSES LEADER OF FRAUD

Former President Juan Bosch, falling behind in partial electoral returns, accused President Joaquin Balaguer of fraud Thursday and called for street demonstrations.

Bosch called a news conference after results from Wednesday's general election announced by the electoral board showed Balaguer, a five-time president, had overtaken Bosch's narrow early lead.

Only about half of this Caribbean country's polling stations had reported results, and the outcome remained uncertain, with the two rival candidates running neck-and-neck.

Balaguer, 83 and blind from glaucoma, and Bosch, 80, who has moderated his leftist ideology in recent years, were opposing each other for the fifth time for the presidency.
