KOREAN STUDENTS, POLICE MARK BATTLE WITH CLASH

Radical students hurling rocks and firebombs fought police in Kwangju and a dozen other cities Thursday, the eve of the 10th anniversary of a bloody anti-government rebellion in Kwangju.

Meanwhile, 27,000 workers at the nation's largest car plant continued a strike for a third day.

The nation's 130,000-strong police force was on top alert after a major dissident coalition called for nationwide anti-government protests to mark the Kwangju anniversary Friday.

At least 200 people died and more than 1,700 were injured when troops and tanks crushed a May 18, 1980 uprising in the southern city.
