SOVIET NEWSPAPER SEEKS U.S. ADVERTISERS

When about 150 American business executives got letters last week inviting them to advertise in the Communist Party newspaper Pravda, many mistook it for a practical joke.

But Victor Linnik, Pravda's New York correspondent who has the job of selling advertising on top of his reporting duties, said his newspaper is serious about the idea.

For $50,000 a page, U.S. companies can push their products to a publication that reaches some 8 million Soviet citizens. But so far, interest appears to be somewhat cool. Only three companies have expressed interest, Linnik said.
