N.Y. JUDGE DROPS MOST HELMSLEY TAX COUNTS

Nearly all 188 counts in a state tax-fraud and tax-evasion indictment against Leona Helmsley were dismissed Thursday by a state Supreme Court judge in Manhattan, but he retained enough of them to leave what he called a strong case against her.

The judge, Justice John A.K. Bradley, threw out 180 counts on the ground that they would violate Helmsley's constitutional and statutory protections against double jeopardy, that is, of being tried for the same crime twice. She was convicted last year on similar charges in a federal case.

In the eight counts the judge let stand against her, Helmsley is charged with fraudulently conspiring to evade paying state income taxes by declaring as business expenses her personal expenses as well as the costs of renovating her condominium in North Hills, N.Y., and her apartment at the Park Lane Hotel in Manhattan. - The New York Times
