EMBEZZLING CHARGE SENT TO GRAND JURY

A former secretary for Bedford Main Street Inc. waived a preliminary hearing Thursday on charges that she embezzled funds from the non-profit organization.

Bedford General District Court Judge James Farmer certified to a grand jury the charge that Shari F. Mullins, 26, of Roanoke took in excess of $200 from Bedford Main Street.

Bedford city police investigators say more than $8,000 was discovered missing when it conducted a routine examination of finances earlier this year.

Bedford was one of the state's first five municipalities to be included in Virginia's Main Streat program when the local organization was started in 1985. The group has an annual budget of about $65,000.
