SENATE OKS BILL TO CURB CHEMICAL ARMS

The Senate approved legislation without dissent Thursday night requiring the president to impose sanctions against countries that violate international agreements against use of chemical and biological weapons.

By a vote of 92-0, the Senate adopted the bill despite the threat of a possible veto by President Bush.

The legislation, which had bipartisan support, was prompted by the use of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq war and Iraq's use of the weapons last year against its Kurdish minority. - Associated Press
