Nearly all 188 counts in a state tax-fraud and tax-evasion indictment against Leona Helmsley were dismissed Thursday by a New York state Supreme Court judge in Manhattan, but he retained enough of them to leave what he called a strong case against her.

In one of the largest settlements of its type in California, the city of Hawthorne agreed Thursday to pay nearly $2 million to members of the Vagos motorcycle club and others who claimed they were targets of massive police abuse in the early 1980s.
