MISSING PLANE FOUND

The wreckage of a small plane that had been missing for a week with six men aboard was found Thursday in a thickly wooded area of Spotsylvania County, state police said. There were no survivors.

The wreckage was found about 2:45 p.m. by ground searchers two miles south of the intersection of Virginia 608 and Virginia 612, about 15 miles southwest of Fredericksburg, said state police Sgt. J.A. Bowden.

Lucy Caldwell, a state police spokeswoman, said the six bodies were found in a 500-square-foot area around the wreckage. She said the men appeared to have died upon impact.

Janet Clements, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Emergency Services, said ground crews from Appalachian Search and Rescue found two pieces of the red-and-white plane - part of the fuselage and the tail section. A member of the search team was Todd DeBoer, brother of one of the victims, Doug DeBoer, Caldwell said.

Caldwell said there was no indication of a fire and the cause of the crash had not been determined. Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were due at the site today.

The bodies and wreckage will be brought out today after investigators examine the site, she said.

Caldwell said the wreckage was not visible from the air.

Relatives of the victims were notified Thursday afternoon, Caldwell said. She said the victims, in addition to Doug DeBoer, were Ron Wiencek, 34, of Fairfax, the pilot; Jim Wolfe, 32, of Stephens City; Alan David Weggeland, 37, of Derwood, Md.; David Day, 38, of Arlington, and William Lloyd Jr., 30, of Leesburg.

Since May 10, searchers had been trying to find the single-engine Cessna 210 that vanished on an early morning flight from Manteo, N.C., to Winchester.
