FORD TO CLOSE ATLANTA PLANT FOR WEEK

Ford Motor Co. said it would shut down its Atlanta assembly plant for one week beginning Monday, idling about 2,500 hourly workers.

Ford said the halt in production resulted from a shortage of orders for the Taurus and Sable models.

Sales of the Taurus have slumped 4.4 percent this year, compared with 1989. Sable sales are down 17 percent.

Ford also produces the models at its Chicago plant.
